Title Town USA: Fantasy Year In Review Part 3

Part 3: The Season

Drafting your squad is only part of the job and half the fun of a fantasy season.  The rest of the job entails managing your team on a weekly(daily) basis and your match ups with the other managers every week.  The real NFL regular season lasts 17 weeks.  The fantasy regular season lasts 13 weeks, with the last 3 weeks of the NFL regular season being the fantasy playoffs.  Most leagues typically have no games in week 17 of the NFL season because a lot of playoff bound teams begin resting some of their star players so they don't get hurt before the NFL playoffs.  This can make a week 17 fantasy championship match up garbage if say you have Aaron Rodgers who figures to get maybe 1 quarter of work in the last game of the season because the Packers are 14-1 and have home field/first round bye all locked up.

Our league pits the 10 teams into 2 divisions of 5, with the top 3 teams per division advancing to the playoffs.  The top 2 teams get a first round bye and then play the winners of round 1.  Our divisions are a bit lopsided, with 1 being far and away more competitive and better and the other being comically inept.  4 out of the top 10 teams actually came from "hearts" division, with the "spades" division having 2 of the worst 3 teams, which doesn't include a team that made the playoffs with a losing record.

Hearts:  Cam, Freshman, Geier, Moof, Teddy
Spades:  Drew, Tay, Shawn/Josher, Mo, Willie

Regular Season
Week 1 is the toughest time for managers to set their lineups.  Outside of 2-3 guys on the roster I never know who to start that first week, RB and WR especially.  We draft guys in part on how they did the previous season and in part on their overall career performance.  When week 1 rolls around though I feel as if all of that goes out the window.  I second guess every guy I plug into my starting lineup then hold my breath all weekend to see if I made the right calls.  There's added pressure in week 1 because you want to get that first win out of the way and get a jump start on your divisional opponents, especially if you're playing one that first week.

A win in week 1 is great.  It inspires confidence in your roster and that start 'em sit 'em choices you made.  After a week 1 victory you feel like you can win week 2.  There's no sense of doubt.  It also makes taking a week 2 loss a bit easier.  Its much better to be sitting at 1-1 after two weeks than it is to be 0-2.

After three of four weeks you can get a sense of how the rest of the season is going to play out.  A few teams may be undefeated or have only 1 loss to this point.  A couple teams may even still be win less.  With only 13 weeks to the regular season, every match is pretty important.  I lost in week 2, then rattled off 6 consecutive wins until I lost to teddy by 4 lousy points in week 9.  That would be the last loss I had in the season.  I finished 11-2, top of the division and proud owner of a first round bye.  Teddy didn't win a game till week 6, which is a playoff death sentence.  Willie started 1-1 then dropped 6 in a row but still had a chance to make the playoffs after he won in weeks 10 and 11.  Two losses in the final two weeks sealed up last place in the division for him though.  Drew started 8-0 then dropped 3 of 4 but still got a first round bye.  Shawn/Josh started 0-4 but still managed to finish in 3rd with a losing record due to the incompetence of the Mo and Willie.  I feel bad for Moof though, because if he had been in the other division with softer opponents he would have finished 8-5 and made the playoffs

As you can see from the final standings, the divisions were pretty uneven. Freshman, Geier and I battled it out for the top 3 spots all year long until injuries started to take their toll on Geier's squad, which almost let Moof sneak into the playoffs.  I pulled away at the end to finish 3 games up.  Drew was never in danger of finishing any place other than first, just like Mo and Willie never really had a shot to make the playoffs, though they almost did catch the co-manager's towards the end of the year,

Playoffs!
As they often say: on any given Sunday, any team can win.  In the playoffs this rings especially true.  But if you lose in the playoffs, its game over.  There is no tomorrow.  All the fighting you did to get to the post season means nothing.  Once you're in its a whole new world.  Your regular season record doesn't matter, nor does it matter if you already beat your current opponent earlier in the year.  The tension and pressure gets ratcheted up a few notches because not only is it a lose or go home scenario, there's money on the line.  In this case, a $600 first prize that everyone wants.  Getting that first round bye is crucial because it means you only need 1 win in the last 2 weeks to come away with at least some money.

In round 1, Freshman beat a fading Geier as expected but the Cummers pulled off a mild upset in beating Tay.  Round 2 featured one the the most thrilling and anxiety ridden matches in many years as I held on for a 2 point win over freshman.  Drew defeated the co-managers as predicted in a match that was never close which set the stage for the championship.  In the end, I defeated Drew quite handily, while Freshman defeated the Cummers for 3rd place and a $100 payday.

So that wraps of our year in review.  As fun as the whole process of a fantasy season is, towards the end it begins to weigh heavily on you, especially if you're in multiple leagues.  Being the commish just adds another layer of stress as I have to ensure everything runs smoothly and fairly for the year.  Now it is time to rest and actually enjoy the real NFL playoffs without having to do anything for a few months.

Title Town USA: Fantasy Year In Review Part 2

Part 2: The Draft
This year was the first time the league was conducting the draft with having 2 keepers already on our rosters.  Never having done a draft like this before I wasn't quite sure what to expect since 20 players were alrady off the board before we even began. (10 man league, 2 keepers each)  Its a traditional snake draft and I held the 3rd overall pick.  I'll highlight my pick each round and analyze each of the 16 rounds by pointing out steals, reaches and other insights.

Round 1

Mendenhall
Rivers
Calvin Johnson
Blount
Fitzgerald
Hakeem Nicks
Vincent Jackson
Mike Wallace
Reggie Wayne
Miles Austin

Didn't agree at all with the first two picks really.  At #1 Matt Forte would have been a better choice if you're dead set on going RB there but taking a top WR like Calvin or Fitz makes more sense, especially when that manager already had 2 keeper RB's.  Rivers wasn't a bad choice at the time, but he ended up not living up to his draft position.  The Blount pick is also questionable because there was more proven talent out there at RB and you don't really want to have your first pick be a whiff if the guy turns out to be a one year wonder.  The other picks are fine except maybe the Reggie Wayne choice.  At that time it was still unknown if Peyton Manning was going to play or not but I would have played it safer and went with a more stable situation and a younger player, like Miles Austin who went the very next pick.  As for my pick, Calvin ended up being worth it and then some.

Round 2

Matt Forte
Ahmad Bradshaw
Desean Jackson
Dwayne Bowe
Javid Best
Ryan Matthews
Wes Welker
Dez Bryant
Ben Rothlisburger
Santonio Holmes

I felt Welker went a bit early here.  Yea he ended up being the #2 guy this year so the value ends up being justified but I think he still would have been there at least a round or two later.  Not to mention this pick took literally 10 minutes of deliberation to decide.  The Big Ben and Holmes picks (both by the same manager due to a trade)  were also highly quesionable.  Big Ben because much better QB like Romo and Schaub were still on the board and Holmes for the very same reason, better players were available and both those guys could have been drafted 5 rounds later easily.  As for my pick, Bryant was the 11th WR taken and finished #20, though he did miss time due to injury so I'm happy with the selection.

Round 3

Mike Williams (TB)
Deangelo Williams
Felix Jones
Benjarvus Green-Ellis
Jeramichael Finley
Antonio Gates
Romo
Beanie Wells
Matt Schaub
Marques Colston

The first two picks here (both by the same manager due to a trade) were pretty bad.  Both players on teams not that aren't good with rookie QB's, new coaches and in Deangelo's case, other talent at the position, making for an uncertain time-share scenario.  Not in love with Green-Ellis in this spot either as a guy like Beanie Wells or or Marshawn Lynch would have been safer moe productive choices.  We also saw two TE go in this round, which I felt was too early to consider TE.  I like the rest of the choices though,  My choice of Felix Jones was a bit of a gamble since he was a newly annointed starter and how he would hold up over a full season was unknown.  He did get hurt and miss 4 weeks then rode the pine for another 4 weeks before reclaiming his job and turning in two solid games for fantasy playoffs so the gamble payed off.

Round 4

Jason Witten
Jeremy Maclin
Knowshown Moreno
Dallas Clarck
Shonne Green
Jon Stewart
Plax Burress
Percy Harvin
Stevie Johnson
Brandon Marshall

The Dallas Clark pick is a risk here because of the Peyton situation and he's had injury problems himself recently.  I also think better TE could have been selected here like a Vernon Davis or Owen Daniels.  The Jon Stewart pick is bad for the same reason the Deangelo Williams pick is bad, too much uncertainty.  The worst pick of the round is Burress though by a landslide.  Way too much risk this early in the draft.  I don't love Stevie or Brandon here because their teams are bad but they weren't horrible picks because they are talented guys.  I took Harvin here which was again a little risky.  The vikings arent the best team but his talent level warrents the selection.  He started slow but finished #14 making him a good value here in round 4.

Round 5

Mario Manningham
Ryan Grant
Anquan Boldin
Mark Ingram
Cedric Benson
AJ Green
Chad Ochocinco
Brandon Lloyd
Vernon Davis
Kenny Britt

The Ingram pick is another head scratcher because its a 4-way platoon in New Orleans and there's still better guys out there.  The AJ Green pick here ended up being a great selection as he had a fantastic year for a rookie WR.  The other bad pick is the Ochocinco choice, but him going to Tom Brady and the Pats might appear to be a good situation if you thought he still had some jucie left in the tank, which he didn't.  Had Kenny Britt not been lost for the year with an ACL tear and kept up his production all season that would have been the steal of the draft.  My Boldin pick here is just a solid choice of another starter on a good team.

Round 6

Josh Freeman
Marshawn Lynch
Owen Daniels
Eli Manning
Steelers D
Jimmy Graham
Pierre Garcon
Fred Jackson
Mercedes Lewis
Rob Gronkowski

Lynch is great value here in round 6 while making Josh Freeman your starting QB is a big gamble.  Way too early for a D/ST to be drafted, especially reaching on a unit that ended up finishing at #9.  Getting the top TE in Gronkowski here is a phenomonal job while the Garcon pick again leaves a lot to be desired.  I had 2 picks this round and nailed both of them.  Got the #2 TE in Graham and Fred Jackson was the #2 back up until his injury in week 11.   He still finished at #10, making him first round value drafted in round 6.

Round 7

Reggie Bush
Sidney Rice
Daniel Thomas
Roy Williams
Julio Jones
Willis Magahee
Lee Evans
Mike Tolbert
Austin Collie
Joe Addai

About the only good pick here is the Julio Jones choice.  Reggie Bush panned out eventually but that manager was already out of playoff contention by the time it did.  Magahee is good value here but he was the projected backup at draft time.  Roy Williams is another awful choice here as was the Collie and Lee Evans picks.  Me taking Thomas here was a pure flier.  I already had 3 RB so I gambled on a rookie since he was projected to start.  It wasn't a total bust but close enough.

Round 8

Matt Stafford
Brandon Jacobs
Santana Moss
Packers D
Robert Meachem
Steve Smith (CAR)
Rashad Jennings
Joe Flacco
Braylon Edwards
Eagles D

Stafford here turned out very well but was a risk given his injury history.  The Jennings pick is hilarious because the guy was already on IR when we held the draft.  Not a fan of the Edwards pick either since his better days are long behind him.  The #5 WR in Smith is a steal here in round 8, even if we all thought he was done after a miserable season the year before.  I took Flacco as Aaron Rodgers bye week fill in/insurance here so nothing further to add.

Round 9

Mike Thomas
Tim Hightower
Jets D
Matt Ryan
Darren Sproles
Sam Bradford
Thomas Jones
Bears D
Ravens D
Danny Amendola

Mike Thomas is a waste, especially when a guy like Jordy Nelson goes 2 rounds later.  The Amendola pick is high risk but high reward which ended in disaster when he got hurt.  The 2 QB selections were backups.  RB's by this point are pretty slim pickings so its no shock to see some recognizable names go, even if they're backups or not good.  Can't arugue with the Bears or Ravens D going here either.  Traditionally I wait another few rounds on my D but I took the Jets here because I've never really had a top 5 D on a team and I felt I could wait another round to start getting some WR depth.  Plus I felt a run on D happening since some were already off the board and I wanted to be at the top of the run, not the bottom.

Round 10

Pats D
Danny Woodhead
Jerome Harrison
James Starks
Heinz Ward
Saints D
Javon Ringer
CJ Spiller
Mike Sims Walker
Montario Hardesty

I'm glad someone took Woodhead and Harrison off the board and wasted a couple picks. Ringer was taken because that person was trying to screw me over by drafting my stud's backup, aka handcuff.  The Sims Walker pick is also a bad one here.  Can't fault the Hardesty pick as it was a Peyton Hillis handcuff.  I took Spiller here since I had taken Fred Jackson 2 rounds earlier and you never know with the Bills.  Ended up being a great move as Freddy got hurt and Spiller essentially won me the champhionship.  Meanwhile, I traded away CJ and Ringer got hurt anyways.

Round 11

Mark Sanchez
Falcons D
Lance Moore
Jordy Nelson
Johnny Knox
Nate Kaeding
Chargers D
Aaron Hernandez
Jay Cutler
Ben Tate

The Sanchez pick is bad considering he's your back up for Big Ben, not a good pair of QB to roll with for a season when QB is the most important position on the roster.  The Nelson pick here is excellent as he ends up being the #4 WR and is an absolute steal in round 11.  Classic example of why to never take a K before the last round as Kaeding ended up on IR for the year.  Hernandez is a solid back up for Owen Daniels as is Cutler a good back up.  Tate is a necessary Arian Foster handcuff..  In hindsight I should have taken Nelson over Moore but my plan was to get Nelson the next round, I just got beat to the punch.  Both players are similiar; highly talented guys on good teams with all world QB's.  Nelson just had a way better year than Moore.

Round 12

Randy Moss
Ricky Williams
Ryan Fitzpatrick
Kellen Winslow
Ryan Torain
Donald Browd
Deion Branch
LT
Bernard Berrian
Andre Roberts

I understand taking a gamble on a retired guy who may come back, but you do that in round 15 or 16, not 12.  The Berrian pick is a bit suspect but he was the defacto #2 for the Vikings at that time so its not too big a stretch even if he did get cut midseason.  We still don't know who Andre Roberts is.  In light of Jordy Nelson being snatched I went with LT here for a little more depth at RB, still not believing in Shonne Green's abilities.  Ended up trading him for a back up TE which saved me a waiver move I later used to add Kevin Smith.

Round 13

Delone Carter
Ronnie Brown
Malcolm Floyd
Kendall Hunter
Emmanual Sanders
TO
Greg Little
Nate Burleson
Michael Crabtree
Brent Celek

I was never a Ronnie Brown fan when he was a starter, much less a back up to Ray Rice.  Delone Carter is another odd choice given hes most likely 3rd on the Colts depth chart and they don't run the ball anyways.  TO gets drafted here, and while not retired like Moss, he is a free agent with no team and it ends up being a wasted pick.  The rest of the picks are ok.  Floyd is just more depth here but the guy tends to put up big numbers when he can actually stay healthy, which also ended up being the case this year.

Round 14

Lions D
Greg Olsen
Dallas D
Matt Cassel
Brandon Pettigrew
Kevin Kolb
Dustin Keller
Giants D
Anthony Dixon
Heath Miller

Cassel isnt a bad pick, but that manager already had 2 QB and theres never a reason to draft 3.  The Dixon pick is amusing because its handcuffing the handcuff.(Gore>Hunter>Dixon).  I wasn't going to draft a second D but decided to last minute since I had an extra pick pending in the final round.

Round 15

Stephen Gostowski
Chris Cooley
Mike Williams (SEA)
Tampa D
Tony Gonzalez
Vince Young
Pierre Thomas
Mason Crosby
Chiefs D
Niel Rackers

Considering Gonzalez was thought to be washed up and he ended up being the #3 TE this is a dynamite pick here.  Drafting a 3rd QB thats a backup is usually a terrible idea but since VY backs up Vick and Vick gets hurt a lot its actually not a terrible move.  Pierre Thomas has had success in the past but the Saints have 4 RB so its just a messy situation I would have avoided at all costs.  Williams busted out late last season so why not in round 15.  At this point you're just hoping to get lucky.

Round 16

Josh Bown
Rob Bironas
Roy Helu
Garret Hartley
Raiders D
Matt Bryant
Vinateri
Tony Moeaki
Jay Feeley
Vikings D

Compensatory Picks:  Janakowski and Billy Cundiff

Mostly K here, though Helu ended up being a nice find.  Hartley unfortunatly went on IR and the Vikings D ended up being bad.  I took a K and a back up TE here who also ended up on IR.

Recap
When all was said and done I was very happy with my roster.  Solid players on good teams, plenty of depth at RB and WR with very little risk and significant upside.  I really only thought that 3 or 4 guys had bad drafts with 2 others having done almost as well as me and the rest being fair.  It turned out I was mostly correct in that asssessment.

Title Town USA: Fantasy Year In Review Part 1

Well I did it. I finally made it back to the promised land of fantasy football champion (in one league at least). All told this year I participated in 4 leagues, 3 for money, 1 for no money, spending $250. I made the playoffs in 3 of the leagues; 2 money and 1 no money. In my work league where I was the defending champ, I had my worst record of 3-10. I lost in the first round of the playoffs in the Lockport league and in the second round of the online no-money league. I did however, win the league that I run, earning me $600, so all told it was a good year.

This marks the second time I've won my league, and 3rd league championship overall in the past 5 years. I've mentioned before some of the strategies I try to employ when drafting which have led to my success. In addition to those, you do need to catch some lucky breaks and have your fellow manager’s fall into some bad luck. This season, because of the off season lock-out, the injury bug hit teams fast and furious. Projected studs like Jamaal Charles went down for the count in the first week and countless others dropped like flies all season long. Many other big names like Andre Johnson were in and out of the line-ups all season due to nagging non-season ending injuries. Not one single owner was left unfazed by a critical injury. The difference between the good and bad managers is proper contingency planning and dumb luck.

I'm going to break this down into multiple parts. Part 1 here consisting of a brief overview and in-depth analysis of my roster by position group immediately post-draft as well as roster moves I made during the season via free agency and trades. Part 2 will be a recap of the entire draft itself and part 3 will cover the regular season and playoffs.

Part 1

In years past, RB was the most important position on your fantasy team. Landing a stud RB was a crucial component in trying to win it all. If you could somehow land two you were almost assured victory. Times however have changed. RB is still important, but as I will demonstrate, you don't need any studs to win a title, just some consistent guys who won't put up goose-eggs.

I had Chis Johnson as my keeper from last year. I then drafted Felix Jones, Daniel Thomas, Fred Jackson, LT and CJ Spiller. That's 1 stud, 2 starters, a rookie who was projected to start and essentially 2 handcuffs to starters. Not too bad a group at the onset of the year. My projected starters for week 1 were going to be Johnson and Jones. As it turned out Chris Johnson sucked for the first 9 weeks of the season, and I actually traded him (plus Boldin) in week 8 for Jon Stewart, Steve Smith and 2 draft picks. I had to start Johnson every week until then though because he's a premier guy and you should never really bench your studs. Jones and Thomas both had slow starts whereas Fred Jackson exploded right out of the gate, forcing me to play him until his season ending injury in week 11. Thomas missed time due to injury had a couple good games then lost his job to Reggie Bush and never got it back. Jones also got hurt and missed weeks 7-10, and also lost his job. Fortunately for me, his replacement, DeMarco Murray, got hurt right before fantasy playoffs began, making Jones relevant again. CJ Spiller also turned in some fine outings after Fred Jackson went down. My trade pick up Jon Stewart was good enough to keep the ship afloat as my other backs struggled while I dealt with various injuries. Also a rare event happened; a late season waiver RB gem emerged on the Lions, Kevin Smith. Though he missed a couple games due to injury he put up a lot of points when I had no one else to turn to, especially in the fantasy playoffs. Essentially, I was able to mix and match some guys together for the entire season that did just enough to help me out.

Now RB is just one of 6 positions and 3 roster spots you have to worry about. For all the troubles my RB gave me over the season, I had a clear advantage at a couple other positions; QB, TE, WR and D/ST.

At QB I have Aaron Rodgers, who I actually never drafted. The first season we moved to a keeper league I actually got Rodgers in a trade. I offered a guy (who actually won the league that year) Kyle Orton and Brandon Lloyd for Rodgers and he took it. He needed WR help bad at the point and Lloyd ended up being the #1 WR in fantasy that season. Orton wasn’t playing bad but he’s a downgrade over Rodgers for sure. So now I have Rodgers, who is one of my keepers. He sits so far above all the other QB's that he gives me a minimum 5 point advantage every week. Having a guy on your team who you never have to worry about getting hurt or having a bad game makes your job as a manager that much easier. . You can also ask the guys who have Drew Brees and Tom Brady. As my bye week fill-in, I took Joe Flacco, a fairly safe guy with some nice upside who realistically is only going to see my line-up one week of the year.

At TE I lucked out. Some of the pre-season favorites like Jeramichael Finley, Antonio Gates, Dallas Clark, Vernon Davis and Jason Witten all got snatched up pretty early in our draft, between rounds 3 and 4 primarily. TE has become a fairly deep position in the past few years so I wasn't overly concerned when I didn't land one of those top 5-6 guys. I took a shot on a guy who was still relatively unknown but had a lot of pre-season buzz, Jimmy Graham from the Saints. He and Gronkowski from the Pats ended up being two of the biggest steals in the draft as they put up numbers far above all the other TE in the league (finishing #1 and #2 respectively) and a good chunk of WR as well. Just like having that elite QB you never worry about, so it goes with an elite TE. You start him every week except his bye week. I did draft a second TE, 2nd year man Tony Moeaki from the chiefs but he was lost for the season in KC's final preseason game. I foolishly panicked and grabbed a guy off the waiver wire, Todd Heap, in what ended up amounting to nothing more than a squandered acquisition. Later in the year I traded LT to another manager for Greg Olsen for my bye-week need.

Now we come to WR, which is the hardest position to gauge because their production depends on many factors outside their control, namely, who's throwing them the ball. It’s easy to whiff on a WR and every year there’s 4 or 5 guys who go undrafted then explode out of no where and end up being waiver wire adds. WR is always the deepest position so you can always get quality guys here late in drafts and even on the waiver wire. Here again, I ran into a little luck. As it stands right now, I have 3 of the top 5 WR on my roster, as well as 6 of the top 25 guys. Now in a league with 10 guys, where you can start 2 or 3 WR, to end up with 3 top 5 guys is largely unheard of and it all started with a gamble. Going into the draft I held the 3rd pick and already had a QB and RB as my keepers. WR was the logical choice for my first pick as there would be potentially be several stud guys available, depending how the 2 guys before me picked. As it turns out, one took an RB and the other a QB, leaving me my choice of the best WR that were available to draft. It really boiled down to two players; Calvin Johnson and Larry Fitzgerald. Both players have immense talent but both with big question marks; Johnson with his ability to stay healthy and Fitz with his QB situation. In the end I went with Johnson, who was hobbled by an ankle sprain for a few weeks but finished as the #1 WR in fantasy (Fitz finished in the top ten but was 70 points behind Johnson or 5.5 points a week less). I also drafted the following: Dez Bryant, Boldin, Percy Harvin, Lance Moore, Malcolm Floyd and Seahawk Mike Williams. Bryant turned out to be a top 20 guy as did Harvin. I traded Boldin (who finished #29) in the CJ deal and the rest were more back up depth players. As I said I got Steve Smith in a trade and he ended up as the #3 guy and coming in at #4 is Victor Cruz, a waiver pickup that no one had even heard of before the season began. A little luck and some good timing is all that separates fortune from disaster. I did also use a waiver move on Erik Decker, who had a few good games and landed at #27.

As far as D/ST goes, they always end up being the biggest point earners in our league due to the scoring set up yet typically no one drafts them till late. Reason being it’s hard to project year to year which team will actually be good. Mo jumped on the Steelers D early in like round 5 and they finished as the 9th ranked squad. Conversely, the #1 ranked D, the 49ers, were selected until much later, probably around round 10 or later. There’s just no way to justify taking a D in the early to mid rounds. I ended up taking the Jets D in round 11, after some other D's like the Steelers and Eagles were off the board and they finish as the #2 ranked squad. Its better to wait on your D and snatch up more RB and WR depth as you can always find a top 10 D on the waiver wire at nearly any point in the season.

The K spot is the last spot to be covered because it’s the least valuable spot, even if it can win or cost you a week. Kickers are a dime a dozen and even more fluky to predict than D/ST and I never take one until the final round. As evident by Mo, who took consensus #1 K Nate Kaeding in round 13, only to watch him go on IR for the year. I drafted Matt Bryant, who finished #11 and my waiver bye week fill in guy Nick Novak finished #13. David Akers, who finished as the #1 K, was a waiver add by Tay in October. There’s just no way to know so it’s best to just flip a coin on a K and again, look for sleeper guys who will bust out.

I made 2 trades this year.  I traded LT and received Greg Olsen which worked out great for me.  Olsen ended up having a good game during Grahams bye week and LT ended up getting hurt and missing almost the rest of the season.  The other trade was the blockbuster deal of the year where I shipped off the under-performing Chris Johnson and Anquan Boldin in exchange for Steve Smith, Jon Stewart and 9th and 15th round draft picks.  I would also say this deal worked out in my favor.  Boldin had a solid start to the year but cooled down substantially with the emergence of other WR on the Ravens.  Chris Johnson did end up stringing 3-4 nice games together toward the end of the fantasy regular season but then disappeared again during the playoffs.  I did lose a keeper in the deal though and didn't get one in return.  As noted, Steve Smith finished #3 and Stewart helped enough to let me win it all.  Plus, I get two extra picks in next years draft, even if they are late round ones.  But as you'll see in part two, there's always plenty of late round talent waiting to be taken.

In addition to trades, my league also allows for 5 free agent pick-ups of players who went undrafted.  As noted, my first grab of Todd Heap ended up being a total bust.  My second pick-up was used on a back-up K, so no problems there.  The 3rd I used on WR Eric Decker, which turned out OK as I started him a couple times and he produced well enough.  Pick-up 4 was Victor Cruz, which is what we like to call a home run as he finished #4 for WR.  My last move was for Kevin Smith, who exploded for a 200+ yard game just before Thanksgiving.  I would also call this a home run because he shored up my RB situation after I lost Fred Jackson late and Felix Jones was confined to the Cowboys bench.

If you're still with me after all that, part 2 is coming up, round by round draft recap.
